Kings, Queens and Jacks – Maja cards illustrations

Figures for the illusionists' deck of cards, associated with the graduation project of a book "Maja" by Jostein Gaarder. All figures were created by hand as the knife cut-outs. The design is the interpretation of the historical resources – sculptures of Holy Mary, portraits of kings from coins, and armours. The deck itself contains a mysterious manifesto playing a significant role in the Gaarder's book.

The cards treat on philosophical considerations on the humanity, world, God and evolution. In the story, the deck is a mysterious object, half-magical, half-real, speaking the oneiric language commenting on the meaning of life.

Back of each card is subtly marked, what makes the deck suitable to use for the particular magic tricks.
